The short list for the Man Booker Prize has been announced.
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (The favorite to win.)
The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh
The Clothes on Their Backs by Linda Grant
The Northern Clemency by Philip Hensher
A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz
Now I can get started on my seldom-achieved yearly goal of reading all the short listers. According to reports, there was some surprise regarding the fact that Salman Rushdie’s The Enchantress of Florence didn’t make the cut.

The White Tiger is my favorite novel of the year. It’s wildly funny and it’s got a fierce satiric bite. Compassion, anger, humor, all in generous portions. It’s a joy to read. I’ve read it twice. It truly deserves to win.

I listened to Enchantress of Florence and thought it was great, but not Booker Award worthy. I think folks are upset because they’re judging Rushdie on his body of work and not just this title. Which is no slouch of a book by any means.
