Book Discussions of Hard Economic Times. . . for kids.

Many children’s book groups try to stay topical, for example, this month many children’s book groups I know are doing scary books for Halloween or books featuring class elections in honor of the upcoming presidential election.
I think this article and web slide show recommending children’s books about hard times may be a great way to start discussions with children about our economic news.

The article’s author suggests that it may be the time to read about even tougher times. Classics like Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Sidney, the Ramona books by Cleary, and the Little House books by Wilder all highlight families scrimping and saving to make it. Newer titles like How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O’Connor and Spuds by Karen Hesse also feature families trying to get by with very little. The articles slide show features the issues in each of these books from parental job loss to the extreme deprivation of the Great Depression.
