It’s the time of year for bests, and Amazon has released its Best Books of 2008, consisting of the Top 100 Editors’ Picks and the Top 100 Customer Favorites. The only title to show up among the first 10 picks on both lists is The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, no doubt because of the Oprah connection. Here are the top 10 editor picks:
1. The Northern Clemency by Philip Hensher (This title was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.)
2. Hurry Down Sunshine by Michael Greenberg
3. Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America by Rick Perlstein
4. The Forever War by Dexter Filkins
5. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
6. The Likeness by Tana French
7. Serena by Ron Rash
8. So Brave, Young, and Handsome by Leif Enger
9. The Lazarus Project by Aleksandar Hemon
10. The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America by David Hajdu

I am SO impressed with myself — I have read three of those and started (but didn’t finish) a fourth. (read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle; The Likeness; So Brave, Young, and Handsome; didn’t finish The Lazarus Project)

Did you notice that exactly ONE of the authors was a woman? What is the proportion of male to female authors for popular fiction/non-fiction?
