We need a Fiction IV, STAT!

The good doctors at New York Presbyterian Hospital have realized the healing power of talking about books.

In an effort to improve the bedside manners of residents, Dr. Richard S. Panush encourages the discussion of short stories, poetry and essays among his fellow physicians and their patients.

Using literature as a jumping off point for conversations before segueing into the medical issues has resulted in more compassionate patient care and better evaluations for the residents. Participants are calling it “narrative medicine.”

Looks like modern medicine is catching up. Reading can make you better at your job. And now you have another question to ask prospective medical professionals, “What are you reading?”
