TO YOUNG ADULT OR NOT TO
Posted by: Gary Niebuhr

Back on May 1st, I told the tale of how the young adult novel Jemmy by Jon Hassler was selected to be our Greendale Reads title.  We had 25 adults show up for a lively discussion on this title but we had to wait a few weeks to see how the young adults would handle one of their own.

Four.

That was all who showed up.  Now, as book discussion leaders know, there can be many reasons why a book can have a low turnout.  In our case, we discovered that we had scheduled the discussion on a day when our local parochial school population could not attend.

However, on the bright side, the discussion leaders reported back that the four who attended were engaged, enlightened and would like to know when we are going to do our next book.

Does it get much better than that even with bigger numbers?

That’s wonderful! Sometimes the best discussions are with smaller groups and even if a few young people are reading a particular book, it’s better than none.
