Can I recommend Ann E. Burg's "All the Broken Pieces." Written in free verse poetry; a fantastic, thought provoking story for book groups looking for a short story with lots of depth. Written for young readers - great for adult book groups.

I organize our public library's--the Putnam County Public Library, Greencastle, IN--book group. We typically take June off and in July have a "dinner & a movie" night. A book is selected that has a movie tie-in and we read the book, discuss it over dinner (catered by a local restaurant for about $6/person), watch the movie and afterwards talk about the transfer from book to film. It has become our summer "tradition" and is very popular!

The first year we read (and watched) "The Painted Veil" by W. Somerset Maugham. Last summer we read the short story by Alice Munro "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" and then watched the movie version titled "Away from Her." Next week we will compare book to film of "Revolutionary Road" by Richard Yates.

We get out of the heat of the kitchen--and instead enjoy a heated discussion!

"Jacob's Courage" is a tender coming of age love story of two young adults living in Salzburg at the time when the Nazi war machine enters Austria. This historical novel presents accurate scenes and situations of Jews in ghettos and concentration camps, with particular attention to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. It explores the dazzling beauty of passionate love and enduring bravery in a lurid world where the innocent are brutally murdered. From desperate despair, to unforgettable moments of chaste beauty, "Jacob’s Courage" examines a constellation of emotions during a time of incomprehensible brutality.
"Jacob's Courage" is sold through all major booksellers. Read reviews at
