Let the man talk

and the next guy, and the next guy, and the next one.

That’s what this men-only book  group in Columbus, Ohio prides itself on. Oh, sure, there’s wine and cookies, but there’s also hefty sandwiches and conversation to go along with it. Now in its 11th year, this nameless book group reads many of the same titles that library and women’s book groups read: Toni Morrison and Barbara Kingsolver, Charles Frazier and Frank McCourt and the kind of narrative nonfiction that is sure to garner lively debate. They’ve even tackled poetry, Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

Kevin Joy of The Columbus Dispatch has written a thoughtful profile of this group and what I appreciated the most about his story was the respectful tone he took while writing about this established group.  The current members aren’t interested in joining forces with a women’s group any time soon, although they invited their wives to attend a discussion of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. It was a lively conversation which demonstrated that the genders may talk about books differently and that’s perfectly fine, as long as folks are reading and talking. Get more details about the reading and talking men of Columbus here.
