Great Group Reads: The Unit
Posted by: Mary Ellen
The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist is one of the titles that has been selected by the Women’s National Book Association as a National Reading Group Month Great Group Read. It’s a dystopian tale about a society in which some people are considered dispensable–in this case, older men and women who are childless. At age 50 for women and age 60 for men, they are checked into reserve bank units for biological material. Nice apartments, comfortable surroundings, but the residents are expected to donate organs and take part in medical experiments to preserve the health of more useful members of sociey. If this sounds familiar, similar themes are explored in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, and groups that enjoyed that book may like The Unit too.

I read this book the week we got it in the store and I thought it was fabulous. I could not put it down and it is definitely one of those books that stays with you. I highly recommend it.
