Best of the Decade

As a card-carrying member of the OCD List-Making Society, I have to say I love this time of year when everyone under the sun makes a list of “Best (insert plural subject here) of The Year.” This year is a double-whammy since it ends the first decade of the new millennium. So not only will we get Best of 2009, we will also get Best of the Decade lists.
Right now, the list I’m savoring is from the Tin House blog, “Top 5 Literary Essay Collections of the Young Millennium.”
The blog’s barely six months old but I like the way the staff write and think and I’m finding some interesting choices for future book group discussions.
Even though Tony admits that adding the Joan Didion collection may be a “cop out” since all the pieces are previously published, I’m leaning towards that one for my book group for next year.
Look for their blog entry of “Top 5 Book Club Selections” in their ongoing Best of the Decade series.
