Finding Common Grounds in reading
Posted by: Kaite Stover

The Common Grounds reading gang at The Kansas City Public Library narrowed their choices down and it wasn’t easy. Since this group only meets every other month, selections are halved.

We’re opening with a mystery in January to keep with the KCPL Winter Reading Program theme mentioned earlier. Hard Revolution by George Pelecanos will start the year with a wallop, so to speak, before we move kidsareallrightinto the March selection, The Kids Are All Right by the four Welch siblings, Liz, Diana, Dan, and Amanda.

Like the Downtowners, Common Grounds will participate in the upcoming Big Read by discussing Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson in May. We turn to more summery fare with local author Thomas Fox Averill’s The Slow Air of Ewan MacPherson. Averill was a favorite with this group a couple of years ago with his slowairdebut novel, Secrets of the Tsil Café.

The fall selections are The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian and Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris in November. We’ll gather in December for our annual Readers’ Round-Up and toss around suggestions for 2011.

In the meantime, I’m making sure there are plenty of copies to keep the eager readers sated.
