Reading with The Star
Posted by: Kaite Stover

A couple of times this past year I’ve written about a special book group I facilitate, The Kansas City Star’s FYI Book Club. This collective has been around since 2000 and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, when The Star thought the project may be running out of gas, they turned to their local public library for assistance in keeping it going.

This group is one of the most delightful gang of talking readers I meet with. It is never the same thing twice and that is because each meeting brings new faces to the table. Readers may only participant once.

Some book group members may see this as a drawback since readers never get to know each other. Others appreciate the fact that the only thing everyone has in common is the book and this keeps conversation focused. All who participate get a copy of the book to keep.

After many deliberations, the next three titles in the FYI Book Club series have been selected. In January, we’ll be discussing the Notable Book and Alex Award winner, City of Thieves by David Benioff.

In early March, we’re aiming for parents and teens when we discuss The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. hunger-gamesLate in April we’ll take on that soon-to-be-a-perennial book group favorite, The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery.

Other titles up for consideration are Netherland by Joseph O’Neill, Mudbound by Hillary Jordan, and Bailey’s Café by Gloria Naylor.

I’ll keep you posted on how the discussions turn out.
