Possible Pick: The Little Stranger
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk
Every once in a while, a book comes along that I simply MUST talk to someone about. You know what I’m talking about – maybe it’s halfway through and you’re trying to figure out a puzzling event, or maybe your first thought after the last page is, “I have to find someone to talk to who read this! “. These are good contenders for book discussion picks – if you want to talk to someone about it, chances are, others will as well.
Over the holidays, I read The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. I won’t go into the plot here (Nick DiMartino already did a great job), but I would like to draw this book to your attention as a great choice for discussion. Why?
- The ending is just ambiguous enough, and it would be perfect to see if people in your group all came to similar conclusions. As soon as I finished, the first thing I did was log on to Facebook to message my friends to see if anyone else had read it and would discuss it with me.
- There are several different characters, all with many quirks, to like/dislike/discuss.
- When I did find several friends who had read it, they each had a strong opinion about the book in general, as well as about the ending. And, not everyone liked it, which usually makes for a lively discussion.

Loved it! …and yes, my best friend and I had completely different opinions about both the characters AND the ending! I tried to get my bookgroup to read it but was denied due to its length but I will push it again next year!
