A “One Book” program is an excellent way to get people reading and talking about books. Here’s a rundown of some 2010 “one book” programs.

One Campus, One Book (CSU Northridge): The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
One Book, One District (Palatine IL): Loving Frank by Nancy Horan
One Book One Community (North Plains OR): Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson.
One Book One Batavia: Playing with the Enemy by Gary W. Moore.
One Book Two Villages (Winnetka IL): The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

Our One Book program is called Read Along the Lakeshore and it includes most of the west Michigan shoreline libraries from Montague to Zeeland. This year we are reading Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods.

My college is part of the One Book program of Middletown CT. Our book is The Soloist by Steve Lopez. The city where I live, Hartford, is reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for The Big Read.

One Book, One Zip Code is the community-wide reading program in Deerfield, Bannockburn and Riverwoods, IL. Our 2010 selection is Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Previous selections are Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder and Listening is an Act of Love, edited by Dave Isay.

Here in Kalamazoo County, we are reading Snow Falling on Cedars and will host author David Guterson on March 17. Reading Together’s range of programs includes such topics as Japanese culture and the internment of Japanese Americans.

One Book, One Bloomington and Beyond is reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon for 2010. Past titles have included The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf by Mohja Kahf.

“On the Same Page in Lackawanna County (PA)” is reading Julie & Julia, by Julie Powell. A lecture by the author is scheduled for April.
