WHEN IT REACHES US
Posted by: Gary Niebuhr
Jump in the way-back machine and read Misha’s discussion of When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead from August 13, 2009. Besides giving you the basic plot and appeal, Misha and co-worker Linda proved to be great prognosticators regarding its chances of winning the Newbery Award (which it did). Misha was spot on in saying, “it’s also just a fantastic read for anyone who appreciates a skillful writer for any age.”
Our staff readers advisory topic this month was youth fiction and I decided we should all read the latest Newbery winner. While we read in this category to familiarize ourselves with literature intended for children, we were unanimous in enjoying this wonderful tale as adult readers.
This made me wonder if anyone has ever had a book discussion, held for adults, that purposely picked a work intended for the young. We think it might make a great experiment in our library. That same discussion led us to suggest that this title might also work for anyone trying an inter-generational book discussion.
Or, you might just want to read this great tale just because you can. It is that good.
