Faith-based Books
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk

Last month, a friend asked me for suggestions for her church’s book discussion group.  They had pretty open guidelines, the one “requirement” being that they read books with a religious theme – very loosely interpreted.  They had already read the standard book discussion fare (ie Red Tent).

My suggestion to them was Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – with the warning that I certainly wouldn’t say it was religious, more that it was spiritual.  Another person had recommended The Lemon Tree:  An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East by Sandy Tolan.

Last week, I came across this great post on RA for All by Becky Spratford:  Books for A Catholic Book Group. In her post, Spratford points readers to several interesting titles, as well as the resource FaithfulReader.com.  Wish I would have had her post last month when asked for suggestions!

Readers, any other faith-based books to share?  All creeds and denominations welcome!

The Lemon Tree is a great suggestion too. Our group did it 2 years ago and it went over very well. Here is the direct link to what we discussed: http://raforall.blogspot.com/2008/04/book-discussion-lemon-tree.html

When it comes to Jewish books, one of the best places to begin is the Association of Jewish Libraries. They have bibliographies covering every aspect of Jewish books, in PDF format for easy download, including bibliographies on book club selections: http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/resources/bookclub_lists.htm
