Women’s Fic Pick: Bird in Hand

Bird in Hand by Christina Baker Kline is the story of two couples, friends since college, who find their marriages crumbling. Allison and Charlie have been struggling to keep up appearances in their marriage, but when Allison is involved in a car crash that kills a young child, she discovers she cannot count on her husband to support her emotionally. Mainly, because he’s been having an affair with her best friend, Claire. Claire, an author, is married to Ben, who tries hard but can never seem to keep up with Claire.
This is a very emotional book that is sure to get a reaction out of readers. From Allison’s struggle to move past her involvement in a fatal car accident, to the betrayal perpetuated by Claire and Charlie, Baker Kline really gets into the heads and hearts of her characters without ever being overwrought or sappy. There will be a lot to discuss here – marriage, friendship, betrayal, responsibilities, morals.
