Bartender, a Dubonnet and a Dumas, with a twist!
Posted by: Kaite Stover

In Nagykovacsi, Hungary the denizens of Gyopar, a Communist-era watering hole, don’t cry in their beer, they read over it. Over at NPR, someone noticed.

They debate, compare, analyze, fact-check, and explicate using the many books on the shelves of the Gyopar. Owner Peter Maurer had a lot of books sitting around and decided his pub was a good place to keep them. He put up some shelves, took in some book donations from regulars, and his biblio-bar was launched.

After three years, the venture has been very successful. Visitors unwind at the end of the day with some library mixed into their libations. It’s not uncommon for a table of readers to start a discussion over their daily reading. The Gyopar’s collection was even used to settle a World Cup dispute. The bartender found a reputable source (or at least one that satisfied the customers) to answer a sports question.

Wonder if the Gyopar employs a bouncer for those bookknurds who get too excited over the reading?
