Women’s Fic Pick: The Ten-Year Nap
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk

The Ten-Year Nap, by Meg Wolitzer, gives a glimpse into the lives of different mothers who gave up their careers to have children.

Amy’s feminist mother is constantly nagging her to go back to being a lawyer; reserved and wealthy Karen goes on multiple interviews every month but can’t see the need to work; while Roberta, an artist, fears she’s lost her talent. Now that their children, classmates at an exclusive New York private school, are preteens, is it time for the women to rejoin the working world—and do they even want to?

A quiet, insightful meditation on women’s work and what it means to be a mother.  Wolitzer lets her characters unfold gracefully, with a smooth pace to the story.
