My Best of 2010
Posted by: Misha Stone
As Neil mentioned, it’s that time of year when lists of the best books of the year start to crop up everywhere. The New York Times has 100 Notable Books of 2010 and their reviewers have named their top 10. The Guardian has a list of writer’s favorites from 2010, most of which I haven’t heard of and many that possibly haven’t even been published here yet.
Every year I compile my own list of books I loved over the year. They needn’t have been published in 2o1o, simply read and enjoyed during the year. They may not be the best books this year, but they are the books that I loved reading. Here they are:
NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman
Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter
Room by Emma Donoghue
The Man in the Wooden Hat by Jane Gardam
Dune by Frank Herbert
Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski
Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
One Day by David Nicholls
The Hand That First Held Mine by Maggie O’Farrell
The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
Just Kids by Patti Smith
Sex & Stravinsky by Barbara Trapido
This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper
The Financial Lives of the Poets by Jess Walter
What’s fun is that I wrote about many of these books here, sharing my reading experiences with you. Now seeing this list, I can also vouch for all of them as also being potentially good books for discussion. In fact, I am looking forward to discussing Hard Rain Falling and Just Kids with my group next year.
Share your favorite reads of 2010….there must be books out there that kept you reading late, took your breath or simply your mind away, that delighted and floored you, that might not turn up on any other list. Please do share.
