Book Discussion as a social event
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk

Jeff Kamin, a comedian, runs a different kind of book club in Minneapolis.  Called Books & Bars, it’s the kind of book club I wish I belonged to. (hmmmmm….)

Books & Bars holds meetings twice a month in the winter and once a month in the summer at 2 different venues, and attracts around 100 people each time.  (Kamin estimates that nearly 75% of the attendees have even read the entire book and are prepared for discussion.  He also estimates that approximately 40% of the attendees are men.)

I know many libraries have successful “social” groups (see Oak Park Public Library’s genre X and Oak Park Readers; St. Charles Public Library’s TnT as examples).

You can read more about Kamin’s venture at BookBrowse, where they are this month’s featured group.
