A familiar list of quality titles

The National Book Critics Circle announced their nominations for the 2010 Award finalists in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction last night. Four of the five fiction titles should look familiar for turning up on other Best of/award lists. Comedy in a Minor Key is the dark horse title. Written in 1947 by Hans Keilson, it was first published in English last year, thus making it eligible for the honor.
A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan was on the ALA Notable Books list as well as a New York Times and Time Magazine Best Fiction pick for 2010.
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen was also a New York Times and Time Magazine Best Fiction title.
To the End of the Land by David Grossman made the Amazon.com Best Books list and also won a National Jewish Book Award for 2010.
Skippy Dies by Paul Murray was also named to the ALA Notable Books list for 2011 in addition to Time Magazine’s Best Fiction list. It also made the short list for the Costa Book Award, a book award given to an author living in the UK or Ireland for a book deemed by the jury one of the “most enjoyable of the year.”
One of the more intriguing elements of the NBCC awards is its eclectic mix of titles from authors all over the world, making it one of the few global literary awards.
