What Would You Nominate?
Posted by: Misha Stone

What books do you think should be read by the next generation? Which books should be designated contemporary ‘classics’?

The Guardian asked some authors to name the books they thought deserved recognition and a continued readership.

I think that I would want to see the next generation read William Maxwell’s They Came Like Swallows or Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. Both of those books made a strong impression on me.

What would you nominate?

  1. Carmen Says:

Tough question! I could probably come up with a short list, but the first one that comes to mind is White Teeth by Zadie Smith. I read it in my early ’20s, and I had never read something so smart that was also so funny.

  2. The Jungle Says:

THE JUNGLE by Upton Sinclair needs to be read by everyone in these times where freedom, and our way of life is at risk.

  3. Shelley Says:

I totally agree with The Jungle, especially in this age of multinational corporations taking over our country.

  4. Michelle Says:

Helprin’s A Soldier of the Great War, Diamant’s The Red Tent, Ondaatje’s The English Patient, Abu Jaber’s Crescent, Rushdie’s The Enchantress of Florence, Yolen’s Briar Rose, Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha, Rice’s Blood and Gold
