Top 10 Books on Motherhood
Posted by: Misha Stone

This recent Guardian article (yes, I get all of my good ideas from Guardian these days) on one writer’s top 10 books on motherhood got me thinking–which books would I place in that category?

Some of my favorite fictional mothers appear in Maggie O’Farrell’s The Hand that First Held Mine and Eliza Minot’s The Brambles. Oh, and this one keeps coming up for me, but the mother in William Maxwell’s splendidly sad They Came Like Swallows–her death is all the more affecting because you see her through her youngest son’s adoring eyes.

But then there are a plethora of memoirs out there now on pregnancy, childbirth and mothering. I wrote about some for my library’s blog.

But what I cannot think of are parents as fabulously funny and supportive as the ones depicted in a film I watched recently, “Easy A,” the teen film loosely based on The Scarlet Letter.

What are some books that come to mind for you that portray motherhood well?
