Mildred fierce
Posted by: Kaite Stover
I’m starting to suss out books for next year’s reading groups and I think I’ve found a place for the classic by James M. Cain, Mildred Pierce.
This dark yet suspenseful story of a complex mother-daughter relationship will make for interesting conversation. Cain’s penchant for common characters and his unusual focus on food in Mildred Pierce are an appealing draw for readers. Brian Burnes of the Kansas City Star discussed both of these issues recently.
Two filmed versions of Mildred Pierce will also make conversation lively. The original movie starring Joan Crawford played up the dramatic, almost soap operatic elements. This newer version is grimmer and more faithful to the source material.
I’m expecting a rich and thoughtful discussion full of comparisons and contrasts between book and films. If your book group has read this novel before, post your impressions.
