Sherman Alexie's "Blasphemy"
Posted by: Misha Stone

If you or your book group have never read Sherman Alexie before, then his latest book, Blasphemy, a collection of 15 older and 15 newer short stories, would be a great starting place.

Sherman Alexie, winner of the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, writes with bold, brash wit and insight into the lives of Indians (his preferred term over Native American) in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Alexie hones his anger, intelligence and humor in every story so that a reader has a cumulative sense of waves of emotions and thoughts as they progress through the collection. Blasphemy also wonderfully celebrates a young author who is only growing in his powers of observation and stylistic range.

Sure, it’s a little long for some book groups. But the beauty of a short story collection is that the group could choose to allow the group to each read a certain number of stories and ask that members share impressions of the stories they read so as to create a cumulative portrait of a writer. No matter how you slice and dice an anthology of this caliber, you are sure to meet Alexie in all of his fresh, provocative glory.
