Book Group Toolbox #42: Read On…Biography
Posted by: Kaite Stover
Rick Roche just can’t stop talking about people.
He talked about them a great deal in his last book, Real Lives Revealed: A Guide to Reading Interests in Biography. Read the Book Group Buzz post from March 2010 here.
And he continues the conversation in his latest book, Read On…Biography: Reading Lists for Every Taste.
Like all the books in the Read On… series, this one is packed with plenty of lists of people readers will enjoy getting to know and hopefully talk about in a group setting. There are five chapters with about ten lists per chapter of succinctly annotated entries.
The biggest appeal of the Read On…series? The breezy yet thoughtful way the authors compile the book lists and write about the titles. Lists of “Outrageous Rule Breakers” and “Lives on Trial” sit comfortably with with people “In High Society” or “Behind the Battle Lines.” A great tool for book group leaders who have readers clamoring for stories of real people to discuss. As Magan Szwarek suggests, pair this resource with Rosalind Reisner’s Read On…Life Stories. Book Group Buzz noticed this book, too, in April 2010.
