I don’t know very many book groups that don’t choose a classic title to read every year. But if the group is getting tired of cycling through the typical Western canon, give them this list of lesser known classic novels.
Qwiklit, a blog of interesting posts about poetry, theatre, literature, and literary theory, has compiled a list of 20 Classic Novels You’ve Never Heard Of. I must admit I only recognize one title on the list, The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley. However, there’s plenty of intriguing reading on this list.
Try Berlin Alexanderplatz by Alfred Doblin. Qwiklit calls it a thrilling and cinematic portrait of urban Berlin. And if your group loves Jane Austen, but they’ve read their way through her list, try Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell.
An ambitious group could read their way through this entire list.
