You may not have heard of Julia Stuart's The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise (I hadn't before I read enough about it to want to pick it up) but I guarantee you'll come away from it with a kinder feeling toward life. I recommend it and her earlier title The Matchmaker of Perigord to anyone I talk favorite books with.

Correct it to - Henry James

Our book club did Turn of the Screw for October 2009. It was wonderful!

I will not read or endorse this book The so called hero of this story is a wife abuser who constantly knocked his wife around. He is NO hero.

He is also among my favorite contemporary writers, and Nobody's Fool and Straight Man are my favorites, too. He's one of the authors I keep an eye out for in the "New Books" section. I'll even spring for the hardcover!

Why is it so hard to create a complex female character? That's a real drawback in a novel.

The title of this masterpiece is so off-putting I would never have selected it. Thank goodness a member of my book group urged us to read it. Almost every page surprised, enlightened, or mesmerized me with a brilliant passage. This is a masterpiece of a novel!

I read this book a few months ago for the first time. Never have I encountered a "mystery" that was so literate. It was hard reading--in a very good way. I needed to draw on all of my resources to follow it and came away thinking that my education was just not up to par. What a wonderful book.
